City of Lamar Colorado Demographics
Lamar is a Home Rule Municipality and the county seat of Prowers County, State of Colorado, United States. Agriculture is one of the main industries in the area with the wind energy business and small business manufacturing being of significant importance. There is considerable optimism about the oil and gas business being a viable industry in the near future.
Lamar was founded as a result of a land owners' dispute and a railroad crew moving a train station three miles west and renaming the station Lamar. Although the town's history is spirited, the present life style of Southeast Colorado is tame. Lamar is the hub of Southeastern Colorado located 100 miles west of Garden City Kansas, 75 miles from the Oklahoma panhandle and 120 miles east of Pueblo Colorado.
The demographics of Lamar has shown a 12% decline in population over the last decade. The 2010 Census showed 7,804 residents with approximately 55% of the population being White, 40% Hispanic, and the other 5% of various races.
Lamar has a semi-arid climate with approximately 15.5" of annual rainfall and 30" of snowfall. The average high temperature is 70 degrees and the average low is 38 degrees. Fall is a very pleasant time on the high plains with moderate day time temperatures and very cool enjoyable evenings.
Lamar is in the RE-2 School District with a high school, middle school, 2 grade schools and a charter school under the districts jurisdiction. Lamar participates in most of the Colorado High School Activities sports programs and is in the 2A classification in football and 3A in all other sports and activities.
Lamar is also home the Lamar Community College (LCC). This is a 2 year college that offers an excellent transfer program to other four year institutions. LCC is known nationwide for their Horse Training Management Program and their athletic programs. Several LCC graduates have been drafted in the major leagues and are currently playing at that level.
Lamar and the surrounding areas offer a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiasts, bird watching, fishing, upland game, waterfowl, and big game hunting.
Lamar is an excellent place to raise a family and offers small town living at it's finest.
